George Omoruyi On New Single ‘She’s The Reason’, Afrobeat Influence, Burna Boy Comparisons, & More

Lagos & London native RuyiTheGiant provides insight on his musical inspiration and aspirations.

The way she looks down pon me. With those pretty brown eyes. I’m the rhythm that’s in your legs. The blues in between your thighs. Tell me what you want. No more drama, no more lies

are the lyrics spewing and morphing right along the melodic groove from the hit “She’s The Reason” by George Omoruyi, aka RuyiTheGiant. If you needed a song to reinforce the familair sentiment “don’t leave ya girl round me”, this would be it. This is lay it down music at its finest, Slinging baby slinging. This is like something straight out of a movie scene. Drop your cups, lock eyes from across the room, pull up on each other and hit the dance floor. Let the erotic and sensual vibes permeate the atmosphere. On this night, it’s all love, no strife.

About The Artist

Ruyi aka George Omoruyi is a multifaceted hybrid. Ruyi was born in the Netherlands, raised in Lagos Nigeria and London, and is now based in the United States (New Jersey). The 20 year old do-it-all artist is also an entrepreneur while enrolling full-time at Rutgers University as a Finance major. These days, it’s not easy to keep up with or get a hold of Ruyi. After all, he’s a hot commodity who’s busy schedule can change at the drop of a dime. Fortunately, I was able to track him down to gain some insight and perspective on his musical journey.

Has anyone told you that you resemble Travis Scott & Burna Boy in sound?

I’ve definitely been told by a lot of my mates that I sound like Burna Boy. Even some say they hear me in his songs. As for Travis, I’ve been told that the psychedelic effects my songs give off or how I sing and I make them think of Travis.

How has the UK, Africa, & America influenced your personal sound as an artist?

Afrobeat has influenced me a lot as it’s a genre that hits close to home. I’m a Nigerian And I grew up listening to a bunch of Afrobeat artists as my taste in music grew.  First thing that comes to mind when you think about it is, when there’s Afrobeat there’s also groove. That’s why I tried to put an element of groove in all my music.”

Spending a big section of my life in the UK has also influenced my music as my love for deep house, edm, garage, electronic, dance, and more came to play. I was exposed to a number of European influenced-genres and  I learnt how to mix different types of sounds together hence the blend of elements in my music. America has also influenced me due to the size of the music industry and its popularity. It’s brought up a bunch of amazing talent and legends over the years and I’ve definitely been following along with the sound that comes out of it.

What are your thoughts on Fela Kuti?

Fela He was a big pioneer of AfroBeat in general and I was first introduced to him by my father on a road trip in a back to Nigeria and When I heard him and his music and how he mixed spoken word and jazz and blues with different Afro rhythms together it was something I was captivated by quickly. I’d say he’s the father of Afrobeat.

What would life be like without music?

It’s definitely hard to think about this because I would normally try to imagine my life without music but I can tell you that for the past 8-10 years there is not a day that has gone by where I haven’t listened to music or sang. It’s part of me.”

Who inspired your musical journey?

I have a lot Of musical inspirations and is difficult to say or list all of them in general but I would say what inspired my musical journey would be trying to express myself and the things that I go through on a daily to people who might be going through similar and you know, mostly trying to create a safe space for people with my music.

How far would you like your musical talents to take you?

I would say I would like my musical talents to take me as far as I can go but I also don’t wanna rely on just my talents and I’m ready to work hard and do what I have to do, Trying to create a community and help as many people as I can.
