Artist Corner: ITZ JALEEL
Jaleel Cunningham aka “Itz Jaleel” is a rapper from Nashville, TN. He grew up on old school r&b because that’s the music his parents would always dance to. Early on in middle school he was introduced to poetry and that’s where he started developing his pen game without even knowing it. But poetry, at the time, was more like a hobby and he started playing school sports. Then in his Junior year of high school he released his first rap song on soundcloud. He then found liked to rap but it still wasn’t something he saw as “life-changing” for himself. So he’d release a song or two every now and then for awhile on soundcloud even after he started college in 2017. Then around his Junior year at Tennessee State a close relative passed away, and that’s what pushed him to become a rapper.
Jaleel then released his first album in 2020 and that project became the start for “Itz Jaleel”. After graduating from TSU in 2021 he’s been spending his time working and making music. He’s done plenty of shows around Nashville, with plans to do more shows in ATL soon.
His mentors are family and friends in or around the music industry like Malcolm Dewayne and Langston Hues. And his main goal with music is to provide for his family, and to become one of the greats in the game!
Give us the set up of how your latest music came to be?
My latest music came by me elevating my pen game, and expressing my life as a hardworking, independent hip hop artist.
What is setting your music apart from what is being heard in the music industry today?
What sets my music apart is my originality, my flows, and my beat selection.
How are you multiplying the ways your music is being heard?
I’ve been doing shows, recently I performed at the East Room in Nashville. You can hear my music anywhere with Apple, Spotify, or Youtube.
Why is it so important for you to continue to make new music that matters?
It’s important to make music that matters because there’s a lot of new artists in the industry everyday, and it’s almost like a lot of them are saying the same thing. Making music that matters/an impactful song that can resonate with an audience for decades can turn an artist to an icon.
What does your latest music say about you?
My latest music talks a lot about how not letting anything stop you from chasing your dreams, and not being afraid to put in work to better yourself.
What is the message you are trying to convey for your fans?
To live life, be you, and take care of those who helped you.
Keeping up with you is always fun, where can our audience listen to you NEXT?
Right now we’re working on the video for my next single release titled “On Me” coming out this month.
Leave us with a meaningful story that connects to your latest music that is the ultimate takeaway for your fans?
My next song I’m releasing I wrote for a family member that passed away recently. I say that to say do not take life and those who love you for granted.
