DEAR GENRE

What fire new music can you tell your new fans here about?

Currently, I’m waiting to release a fresh new track called “Body of Water.” The track wrestles with the emotional baggage of rough or undesirable beginnings. It also toys with the idea of an ordinary individual rising to great power & responsibility while feeling unequipped emotionally & spiritually. The song uses the story of Moses, “The baby in the basket” as a loose metaphor.

What is your favorite verse on it?

My favorite line in the song is in the second verse; “Just because you’re angry doesn’t make it alright for you, just because you’re angry, please don’t make it a life for you.”

Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time speaking and acting out of anger. As I get closer to turning 30, I’ve realized that being angry isn’t always justified and more often than not has held me back in my own life. I feel like that verse is a reminder to myself that living in anger isn’t something I want to do anymore.

What were you most meticulous about on your latest song?

During this production, I feel I was most meticulous about the drum track. As an upbeat single, I felt that a flawless & thoughtful drum track would not only keep the song lively but also serve as a backbone but would also make the rest of the production that happened on top of it that much more powerful. Being that I picked up playing the drums when I was five years old then grew into being a perfectionist, recording the drums was probably a task for the recording engineers & producer Damon.

Any new collabs happening soon?

No new collabs happening soon.

Dream collab?

Writing a song with bands like Grouplove, Manchester Orchestra or MGMT would be my dream collab. I’d also jump at the chance to play drums with the Foo Fighters in a heartbeat.

Is there a critique you’ve gotten on your music that you worked through and it’s made the overall work better?

Somebody told me once that they loved my music but couldn’t shake the feeling that my recordings felt incomplete. Recently, I feel that I’ve taken that critique to heart & have tried spending more time in the studio on things like post production, instrument volume as well as the overall mix & master. I’m very thankful for that critique all those years ago.

What are you most excited about for fans to hear on your latest single?

I think the last question has made me realize if anything, I may be most excited for my fans to hear this new production style I’m aiming for. “Body of Water” sounds very bright, clean, clear & blended.

We also used a few post production tricks like vocal looping, backwards guitars & texture pads that really took this production to a new level.

Give us anything else you want to know about what you’re up to?

I’d like to let people know they can also be expecting a “Body of Water” music video along with the release of the song the day of October 1st!
