Virginia artist Zay King is making his music video debut with his new song titled “Flowers”. The “Flowers” artist displays his personal sound, still under construction, that he simply describes as “vibey” for now. Between Zay’s melodies and the guitar riffs that immediately grab your attention on this instrumental, “Flowers” is well worth King’s fitting description of vibey. However, this promising artist from the 757 left me underwhelmed on this track for a few reasons. Let’s take a deeper dive into King’s latest release off his upcoming EP ’SweetTooth’.
The beat on “Flowers” gives off Gunna “Drip or Drown 2” or Rylo Rodriguez “Mutual” energy. King captures an acoustic trap sound that will keep your head nodding. “I love my little baby, we locked in I swear ain’t no backing out” are the first lyrics spoken on the record and honestly, it could have hit harder. King’s verses have some good and meaningful lyrics. It’s always nice to hear men actually uplift women on a song, contrary to what we’re used to. But, something is missing. Unfortunately, the lyrics were not matched with enough energy/passion on the vocals to really feel and understand King. There were a couple of nice pockets that the Virginia artist tapped in to throughout the song but the hook just didn’t slap like I thought it would have based on the anticipation that the beat presented.
Nonetheless, King’s first official music video starts off with the camera panned out over palm trees in what looks to be sunny Los Angeles, California. We quickly cut to the 757 native who is wearing a red jacket coated in white hearts, emitting a Michael Jackson “Beat It” aura. Personally, I would like to know the specifics on the camera(s) that were used to film this video because the quality is amazing. The clarity is truly outstanding. What is that, 8k? No seriously, enough cannot be said about how the lens really makes you feel in the moment, like you’re looking through your own eyes. King also gave viewers some eye candy for entertainment. With that, the video as a whole is decent at its best. Besides the quality (which can’t be overstated), the visuals don’t keep your attention.
This is Zay King’s introductory music video, the first time fans are really getting to see and hear the Virginia artist. If Zay wants to gain and retain new fans, the visuals from the video will have to be more memorable. If there’s anything that fans will take away from the visual, it will most likely be the female model’s Instagram. Zay’s star power should have shined during his first music video, and in my opinion, he did not showcase enough of his personality. His persona seemed a bit to laid back for this big moment in his career.
Additionally, as a producer and engineer myself, there are a few tweaks I would’ve made to give this fresh new single more replay value. The vocals are too compressed, so some portions throughout the track are a little quieter than others. Also, while making a song that fuses multiple genres including R&B, the vocals need more saturation and reverb to bring them to life and provide more space on the record. When this is lacking in R&B tracks, vocals tend to sound dry and monotone. “I’m still finding my sound” says King, so I am looking forward to the new sounds and concepts that Zay may utilize on his journey.
Zay King’s debut album “No More Cardio” that released back in 2020 definitely had some highlights. King’s pen is his main strength. As a fan, I want to hear Zay get vulnerable on these tracks, challenge his vocal ability, and really show fans who he is through music. “Flowers” feels a bit surface level and it was hard for the video to save that fact. King’s music sounds “good” but I know it can be great.
