New Jersey’s very own, Zakasi is a forever ascending musician who’s highly admired for capturing the real emotion behind love and loss. In today’s music scene, it can be hard to find artists who aren’t afraid to dig deep within themselves and share their vulnerability with the world. But luckily, Zakasi’s newest single, “Alone,” gives us comfort in knowing that we all share the same pain in some way, shape, or form. On the song, Zakasi taps into his soft register and belts every so often when expressing how he feels about that special someone. Between lyrics, the melodist details the hurt he endured when his loved ones departed from this earth, and honestly, he doesn’t want to go through it again. He also forewarns others to stay on their P’s and Q’s. “These the street rules and you gotta follow through,” he explains in a sing-song flow, “Think they don’t apply to you, then you bound to die soon.”
Elsewhere, Zakasi hints that he’ll protect those he loves at all costs, even if it means taking some heavy precautions along the way. As the song continues, the singer lets it all out and tells his love interest that he’s aware of her deceit. “Thought I felt your love, but I found out it wasn’t true/I can’t get enough. I feel the rush, and it was you,” Zakasi sings, “You fucked with my trust, and that was sus, so now we’re through.” But this feeling is far from unfamiliar. In fact, he’s been broken down so often that he can no longer feel it anymore.
Nevertheless, this newfound dilemma won’t stop him from living his life. As one line from “Alone” implies, Zakasi has been through all the rain, but he still finds a way to strive. Sonically, the song takes a smooth trap soul approach and meshes bright piano loops with a booming bassline and hi-hats.
Coupled with this banger is a visual directed by the film god, Nimi Hendrix. The video sees Zakasi receiving news about his friend passing. “Yo, they’ve got one of ours,” Zakasi’s other friend says to him on the phone. “You gotta come back.” Following after, Zakasi looks at his love interest in disbelief, trying to grasp what he’s just been told.
Then, the scene transitions to Zakasi enjoying the nightlife while donning a light blue Puma jacket and gray jeans. From there, viewers get a glimpse of Zakasi’s personal life. Ultimately, the scenes crossover between Zakasi chilling with his brothers and dealing with his concerned girlfriend. Deeper into the video, we see Zakasi going for a romantic night stroll with his Mrs. It’s not long before the video shows Zakasi and the same friends in the last scene armoring up so justice can be served for their deceased bud. As a whole, the music video shows Zakasi being pulled in two different directions.
