New Jersey based artist VYBZ just released an uptempo alternative rock song that may surprise you. A perfectionist, VYBZ carefully pieced together a masterpiece that would make the late Juice Wrld proud. Putting himself in the lab for almost three years, just listening to instrumentals and writing, VYBZ is ready to showcase the sound that he’s been working on. With versatility at the forefront, VYBZ wants to explore all of his capabilities within music, ignoring the mainstream sounds other artists may blindly gravitate to. With almost a year of releasing music under his belt, the NJ artist is here to set himself apart. We asked VYBZ about the creation of ‘Sin City’, how he’s been crafting his sound, fearlessness to explore new genres, and more.
Stream ‘Sin City‘ now available on all platforms.
‘I was listening to alt-rock beats while waiting for the bus and when I heard the guitar riff on this particular beat, the chorus came to me almost immediately. “Sin city is where you wanna go.” The outline I had for the song was a red theme which would include adjectives such as aggression , desire, passion, action and things of that nature. And also using this as an opportunity to talk about the way people tend to live, in major cities especially. I intentionally tried to have many aspects of life discussed in the lyrics to broaden the relativity range. Furthermore over the next day or two I continued writing the first and second verse with those things in mind while also keeping it conversational.’
Do you pride yourself on versatility?
‘In fact, I do pride myself on versatility. Living in an era where people box themselves in with one style, there’s no better thing to do than display my versatility. And I figured it would be a quick way to have my talent stand out.’
“You think you’re cool cus you’re putting on a costume , look at what it cost you [woah], but you can’t let it go.”
‘Basically sums up a lot of what I was saying on how city life can be. Everyone’s putting on a persona which can lead them to not understand who they are and also the fact that it’s hard for most to change their ways. “Welcome to sin city everybody brags , bout what they have , they living fast”.’
How have you built your sound over the years? Who are some of your influences?
‘Honestly I spent the last three years listening to [mainly] only instrumentals. I’d say 90% of my listening time was only instrumentals which consisted of over 8+ genres. And I was also writing to all those different genres on a daily basis.
I grew up as a kid with a huge radio in my room that was never unplugged so I got the chance to consistently listen to hits from many different genres. But yeah, since I just recently started releasing music October of 2020, the years I spent listening to beats predominantly kept me away from the influence of the new wave of mainstream artistry, even though I understand what makes people gravitate towards it. Which allows me to stay unique but also relatable.
Artists such as the late Juice Wrld inspired me to jump headfirst into expressing my individuality as an artist seeing as how once he started making “different music” that was more true to him, he went global. Besides him, If I had to name some other inspirations early on, Michael Jackson, Eminem , Neyo , Rihanna, Lincoln Park ,Three Days Grace and Lil Wayne.’
Are you working on any projects or music videos?
‘I’m working on a project potentially called Soulrock in the near future but I’ll still be releasing other genres including house. You can also look out for animated music videos with my music in the background.’
What keeps you inspired to try new sounds with no hesitation?
‘It’s what makes music fun for me , being able to ride on it like I’m at the beach surfing on the tides [lol] if you get what I mean. I also would like to make an impact and show people the limitless nature of music.’
I’m sure new fans will want to know where you’re from. Where are you based out of?
‘I’m based out of Newark New Jersey.’
Where can people follow you?
‘Follow me on Instagram @vybz_9.’
VYBZ mentioned creating a red-themed ‘mood board’ to help bring the song to life, using words like aggression , desire, passion, and action to come up with the angle he was going to approach the track. He uses a wide range of subject matter in the lyrics to relate to the largest audience possible. His well managed approach paid off as he has created a dope track somewhere between Juice Wrld, Lincoln Park, and Kid Cudi.
Spending the last three years listening to beats, writing, and being inspired by over eight different genres, VYBZ has drawn inspiration from all corners of music to carefully create a sound that will continue to grow and grow. Whether you are a fan of alternative rock or not, ‘Sin City’ is definitely worth a listen.
