Troy Nōka is a super talented producer, pianist and songwriter originating from Austin, Texas. Nōka has been making a name for himself producing for artists like Doja Cat, Frank Ocean, and many more. And with his latest single from his new album titled ‘Top of the Food Chain’, Troy Nōka is leaving us no choice but to get up and groove.
From the opening crescendo of the violin, I was immediately hooked. The production is solid and I truly wouldn’t expect anything less from a grammy award winning producer. Off the bat, this song exudes “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore energy. With that being said, this is definitely a memorable song with a chance to have some good replay value down the road.
Why You Need To Hear “Top Of Th Food Chain” by Troy Nōka
The beat, the lyrics, and the melodies created are very catchy and before you know it, you are going to be tapping your foot or nodding your head to this guaranteed. Nōka traps you in a celebratory state of mind with this track, very fitting of being on the top of the food chain. Don’t sleep though as the chorus and title of the song have a deeper meaning intertwined throughout his verses.
As I mentioned earlier, this song does put you in a celebratory mood fit to pop open a fresh bottle of champagne, but it’s also a walking double entendre. The Austin artist ends one of his verses with “downtown developments, housing resettlements, raising price for residents, gentrify by prejudice”. These are all ways the upper class gets and stays at the top of the food chain.
The Grammy winning producer is not solely exposing the government and the upper class for keeping us down, but he’s also speaking on what it’s like through his lens of getting to the top. For example, when he says “Flipping words like Vanna white, wheel and fortune in my life, gotta keep on all the lights, this time gotta get it right.. every time I save some Gs, they try to take my bread from me.” Nōka gives the listener a little glimpse of his life and what he is currently going through.
Final Thoughts
Overall, if I had to rate this song out of 10, I would probably give it a seven. The arrangements, the outro, and the bridge are undoubtedly my favorite parts to this track. Nōka has some quotable lines throughout, most notably how he starts the song. “Until they realize what we got can’t be sold” with a cadence very similar to Ryan Lewis in the song mentioned previously. I am very excited to see what lies ahead for the multifaceted singer, and who he may collaborate with next. “Top of the food chain” is off of Troy Nōka’s album Café Society. It was released back in late March, and the sounds are very jazzy and laidback, very fitting to play in that Starbucks type of setting. This is the perfect album if you are looking to study, or want some music playing while you’re working. Ff you haven’t listened yet, what are you waiting for?
