Talk to us about the New Fire Music you have with your single New Angels!
I wrote this song about how sometimes it can seem like there is little hope in the face of so many large problems, like the pandemic and climate change, and that there must be another way to approach it rather than giving up hope. I wanted to remind ourselves that we can create change, even when things look completely bleak.
What is your favorite verse on it?
I think my favorite might be the line “where New Angels play…” The title New Angels comes from a 1920 Paul Klee painting, “Angelus Novus”, which inspired philosophers to contemplate how humanity can move forward in the face of dark times. To me, new angels can mean hopeful ideas or events that we can’t understand or haven’t envisioned yet. The idea of something completely new happening that we can’t expect, is often the type of creative thinking that we need to solve major challenges like the ones we face today.
What were you most meticulous about on your latest song?
The vocals and vocal harmonies. There are lots of layers of vocals and harmonies to make the sound full to go along with the orchestral string arrangement.
Any collabs you want to shout out on the track?
I was lucky to have amazing collaborators to help me bring the orchestration to life, including Violin and Viola Performances by Andrew Joslyn, cello performances by Eli Weinberger and mixing, mastering by George Wiederkehr.
Is there a critique you’ve gotten on the single that you worked through and it’s made the overall work better?
When I first recorded the draft of the vocals, the acoustics in the room were an issue and so I had to re-record in a different space. I was grateful to my mixing engineer to work through that so we could try to get the best sound possible.
What are you most excited about for fans to hear on your latest single?
I always imagined an orchestra playing this song, and this remix comes close with strings, brass, horns, flutes, organ and piano. I am excited to hear what they think of the remix!
Give us anything else you want to know about what you’re up to?
I have a video along with the song coming soon, stay tuned! Thank you so much for having me for this interview.
