We love your new fire music! How did you come up with the concept for the song?
The concept for our latest song called Voices Unheard is all about mental health and battling your own inner demons. When the song was initially written, we wanted to have a back-and-forth vocal duel between our lead singer and our guitarist, who is also an accomplished vocalist. It led to us experimenting with different themes for the song, and we settled on each vocalist playing a different character and having a conversation. McKinzie (our lead singer) plays the part of the person who is battling their inner demons, attempting to rise above the temptations and doubts presented to her, while Anthony (the guitarist) is the personification of those demons, essentially trying to talk her down and ruin her confidence.
What is your favorite part about the song?
Our favorite part of Voices Unheard is the subject matter and the epic back-and-forth vocal style that happens between the two singers. It culminates in the climax of the song as both singers are harmonizing together, building up in intensity as the instruments and supporting orchestra follow suit.
What were you most meticulous about on your latest song?
We were most meticulous about the lyrics and overall structure of this song. It needed to have intense instrumentation to fit the subject matter of battling your own inner demons, but still move, ebb, and flow in a way that would bring the song’s story to a satisfying conclusion.
Who did what on the song?
In Voices Unheard, McKinzie Malcolm is the lead vocalist, Anthony Corso is the guitarist and male vocalist, drumming is Aaron Corso, and Cobi Adams sits in on bass.
What was the writing process like?
The writing process for Voices Unheard was rather standard in how we approached it, except that from the beginning, we knew the song was going to be about someone’s internal struggle. That meant that as we were writing this piece, the vibe was always in the back of our minds, influencing how riffs came about and how the overall song was composed. Like most rock and metal songs, it began with guitars and drums, then the vocals and lyrics were written, and finally the orchestra and other backing instruments were composed.
What kind of mood was set in order to create the magic?
Believe it or not, to get into the proper mood for writing the song and nailing the vibe, we set a rather somber overall tone. Knowing this song would be tackling a sensitive subject, it needed to be emotional and grounded, so there wasn’t much joking around when it came down to writing. We had all watched some sad movies and really committed to putting ourselves in a more vulnerable state of mind to properly channel those emotions into what we were writing.
What are you most excited about for fans to hear on your latest single?
We’re most excited to show the next step in the evolution of the band. Voices Unheard is a step up for us both in writing, performance, and production, and we’re stoked to be able to share the fruits of this labor, both on an album recording and in a live setting!
What has been the best feedback so far?
The best feedback we’ve received was a critic bursting into tears because the song had touched her in a very meaningful way. She connected strongly to the main character dealing with those inner demons, and the conclusion of the song left her feeling hopeful and optimistic about her own personal struggles.
Leave us with your favorite fire lyrics of the song?
Our favorite lyrics are the chorus, where the person battling those inner demons is able to take that first step in dealing with them in a healthy and effective way.
“From the rising sun to the earth undone
And we run across the sky
Of these voices unheard shouting violent words
I will keep my sanity”
