Rex & The Rhythm deliver a heartfelt track capturing the emotional distance in a strained relationship. Their alternative pop-meets-funk single, “Play My Guitar,” showcases Rex’s introspective lyrics about a partner who seems unhappy despite his dedicated efforts to bring joy to the relationship. The Los Angeles-based artist paints a vivid picture of his attempts to make things work, only to feel his efforts are unnoticed. With lines like “I’ve been making lemonade while dating a lemon,” Rex expresses the frustration of giving his all, only to be met with indifference, leaving him questioning why happiness feels so out of reach.

About his new single, Rex stated, “It’s about giving your everything, but being still taken for granted in a relationship. I wanted to make something like “Songs About Jane” era Maroon V had a love child with current-day Anderson Paak. I wanted the song to be a concert in a bottle. Funky, soulful, live with a big hook.”

Through “Play My Guitar,” Rex suggests that although he was sure of the signs, he was still blindsided by her lack of appreciation. The lyrics “Tryna build a kingdom thought she could be my Coretta/But all she want is drama like my name Telenovela,” show that his partner found faults in things even when there was no reason to. As a whole, Rex’s new genre-blending record emphasizes the importance of choosing yourself first on all occasions.
