Leading his rhymes with introspection and self-development, Renz Scruggs thinks back to a series of life-changing events that fostered his ascension as both a musician and individual in “Really Unbothered.”
Over a nostalgic R&B/hip-hop beat, the Seasons hitmaker details his upbringing. He also speaks about being betrayed by his cousin. Despite this wrongdoing, he still cherishes him but never got to express this because his cousin departed this earth. Afterward, the rapper speaks about maintaining a tunnel vision towards his goals. He also opens up about his mentality and seeing too many of his loved ones pass away before their time.
Then, Scruggs reminisces about his come up, saying
“Even when I was 13 getting made fun of for rapping, like you still couldn’t tell me shit/I just knew, always, who I was gonna be/And now here I am.” He knew that music was his truer calling.
As the song continues, the artist takes pride in his success. Additionally, he reminds his kids that this aspect could never keep them apart. The fame and fortune don’t hold weight to his close relationships. If he’s getting a bag, his loved ones are too.
He spits, “Tell my babies I’m coming back soon/Daddy just chasin’ a bag/And when I get it, I promise I’m bringing it back.” Secondly, he raps, “If you my brother I promise I’ll give you my last.”
Later on, Scruggs reflects on a circumstance that could’ve changed his life in the worse way.
The remainder of “Really Unbothered” sees Scruggs talking more about the area he’s from and the citizens there. Although specific scenarios went awry in his town, he’s proud of who he is. So instead of succumbing to the ideals set in his hometown, he went against them. To add, Scruggs guarantees that he’s always protected. No opp can send hatred his way.
“All that I know is I’m proud of the man I’ve become. I don’t got sticks with a drum, but my nigga toting the strap, that made Ricky run,” he spits.
He continues by calling out some men on their behavior, challenging them to elevate.
He says, “Like I feel like most you niggas is just blocking your blessings because you can’t get out your own way. Like everything we doing over here, the people I’m surrounded with, we elevating each other. We trynna get to it we trynna get to the bag. We trynna reach these dreams, straight like that.”
The song closes with Scrugg’s manifesting a successful career and reflecting on his self-growth.
He raps, “I’m really claiming it now/Ima have shows with my name in the lights/You tell me no/I ain’t taking it right. I did some wrong, but I’m making it right.”
Moving forward, Scruggs will be going on tour. About the experience, he says:
“Heading on tour is exciting! It will be an excellent opportunity to connect with other artists and, most importantly, the people coming out to the shows.
The tour is with Yung Dred, Richie Wess, and Smoke Purp. Three artists have made a significant impact in the industry, and I’m thankful I get to see how it works. Also, this is my first time on an actual tour with consistent dates. For example, in one city one day and then another next.
What I hope to gain from this tour is relationships and experience—learning the process of being on tour and everything that comes with being on the road. I’ve seen so many artists who love the road. It builds comradely with your team, the other artists, and their entourage. I do plan on treating this tour like an athletic season. Making sure the other EMG members on tour and I take care of our bodies, most importantly. Going on runs, doing workouts, trying to eat clean.
I remember Drake saying that he was destroying his body in the beginning stages of his career because he believed it was just what his tour was supposed to be. After that, he started treating tour like a sport and trained as such, my fullest intention. I can’t wait to have a ton of fun, but staying on point and ready is essential to me. So I’m letting everybody on tour know now, DO NOT CHALLENGE ME IN 2K BECAUSE YOU WILL LOSE!!! But seriously, I can’t wait to see these different cities. I can’t wait to meet these people coming out to the shows. I’m excited to kick it with the guys while we’re all doing what we love to do.”
Currently, Scruggs is working on a project called RENZ WORLD! So immediately following this tour, they will be going on our tour to promote the new project and interact with the community they’ve been building.
