PET ENVY FEATURING LUTHI

We love your new fire music ‘The Fountain’! Congratulations! How did you come up with the concept for the song?

I had just gone through a real doozy of a breakup that had me questioning my intuition among many other things. This was kind of my letter to myself outlining my fears.

What is your favorite part about  the song?
The fact that i get to sing my ass off with my friend Christian Luthi. Also, he did an incredible job with the verse and his ad libs where he says “i’m scared of waking up with someone other than you”—love it.
What were you most meticulous about on your latest song?

The arrangement. We wanted it to be memorable, sticky, and punchy so we went through several different versions of the song before we ended up with what we were all happy with.

Your collaboration with Luthi is fire! How did this come about?

I’ve gotten to know luthi a lot better over the past several months and that guy is an incredible talent—i knew I wanted a specific second voice on this track and luthi was the first and only person I thought of. We had a blast in the studio, I’m so grateful to know him and work with him.

Who did what on the song?

jake diggity: guitar/bass
jordan klatt:keys/synth
matthew singler: drums
shelbi albert & christian Luthi: vocals
owen lewis: engineering & sparkle

What was the writing process like?

I essentially wrote the song as it is in the notes app on my phone to a track that jordan had sent me—i recorded a verse or so and a chorus and sent it over to jake and jordan and asked them what they thought and i believe they had me come over and track it all out? they were really into it and i was really into them being so into it. we had a chance to get really creative with it.

What kind of mood was set in order to create the magic?

There were actually multiple studio sessions because of everyone’s hectic schedule, so there was a lot of the tracking I didn’t get to see. but owen lewis is great at creating a space where you feel really relaxed. He also gives great notes. I’ve never worked with someone who’s direction was so easy to understand. The way he describes what he thinks something should be is totally unique. it could be a word or a movie reference or even a feeling that he asks you to think about, and builds off that. we’re lucky to have him help us pull stuff out we didn’t even know we could do. He’s helped me hit vocal goals/ performance goals.

Is there a critique you’ve gotten on the single that you worked through and it’s made the overall work better?

Not yet! i think we took critiques of past singles and applied that to the writing process of a lot of our new stuff. but so far we are super happy with this and so excited to put it out there.

What are you most excited about for fans to hear on your latest single?

The relatability and luthi! I think people are gonna melt when they hear him crooning.

What has been the best feedback so far?

We have kept it pretty private but a lot of my friends have said it’s the best and most vulnerable thing I’ve ever written and that tugs on my heartstrings.

Leave us with your favorite fire lyrics of the song?

“if that was a molehill, guess this is the mountain. you couldn’t feel an ounce of my love: let’s name this the fountain.”
