Mel The Prophet speaks from the heart in “WHO I AM.” Over the calm R&B instrumental, he weighs in on the mishaps life has presented thus far. We all are encouraged by others to see the brighter side of things. But, sometimes, it’s easier said than done. Mel The Prophet showcases this very moment as he questions morals that society has forced upon others.
In a solid flow, he raps, “Is it best to live stress?/Pain all in your chest/Is it best to live right?/No one sees how it’s best.”
As the song continues, the New Jersey rapper opens up about his mental health. In hindsight, he feels like the world is silencing him. Mel The Prophet expresses how society pushes the notion of “all work and no play.” Yet, the world could care less about one’s well-being in the end.
“Feeling less/Giving more/How you even the score/On the boards/Never care/if you exist in this world,” he raps. “Pure truth/When you speak/But it seems like a rawr.”
Once the hook makes way, Mel The Prophet lays his feelings on the table. Doing the same expected daily routines makes it unbearable to push through.
“LIVE LIFE LIKE A PROGRAM/I DONT EVEN KNOW WHO I AM,” he declares in a dynamic range.
In the second verse, the rapper advises us to watch out for people with bad intentions. He suggests being on your P’s & Q’s. Some individuals enjoy the thrill of making one’s life harder than it needs to be.
“Bad spirit ties/Laced up ya sneaks/So gutter and clean/You remain unique/From the jungle/Reason why nature you seek,” he spits.
He reckons that you must do what brings you joy and never succumb to chasing the American Dream. After all, life isn’t meant to work your fingers to the bone.
