Meet Produced By a Girl!

Hello! So great to speak with you!

Produced by a Girl Answering: Awesome to speak with you too!

You recently released an album! Will you tell us about that?

Produced by a Girl Answering: I just released a compilation album called Femme Frequency! Femme Frequency was inspired by 5 female artists and producers coming together and exploring the topic of darkness to light to process through what had been happening in the world during 2020 and 2021 when the pandemic was in full force. The female artists:Tess Posner, Lil MC, Sadie Belica of The Waking Point, and Meghan Pulles along with Produced by a Girl (aka Mary Knoblock Founder & CEO of Produced by a Girl), decided on the name Femme Frequeny as it reflects the power of female creators and their unique frequency they bring to music, soundwriting and production. Produced by a Girl sponsored the compilation album alongside The Stachehaus, & KMG, and is honored to be surrounded by incredibly talented females in the music industry. Their talent shines on the album and brings renewal and light to a world that needs healing and equality, and strength. I’d love to feature some artists off the album here below!
What is the most rewarding part of putting your creativity into new music?

Meghan Pulles Answering I think the most rewarding thing about being an artist and songwriter is the fact that I can take my experiences no matter how bad, or good and put them into music for others to enjoy and reflect on. It is such a therapy for me and I am so incredibly grateful for it.
Tess Posner Answering: “If my song reaches someone and has a positive impact on their life, or it helps lift them out of a dark place, it’s worth 10,000 hours of work!”

Lil MC Answering: I love evolving as an artist and continuing to grow and discover new sounds, melodies, cadences and stories to tell through my music. I feel that some artists may tend to stick to one lane  but I’ve never been able to confine my creativity to a box and am constantly incorporating new styles making my music very genre bending. If people are fans of my music they are open-minded and understand that we are all able to encapsulate so many different components to our personhood, therefore you might find me singing a downtempo RNB track or an uptempo latin dance track and everything in between.

What is your favorite part of the writing and recording process?

Meghan Pulles Answering: Writing is such a cathartic release for me, and tapping into the source that provides us with new music, melodies, lyrics, songs and stories is such an incredibly spiritual experience for me, but I think the magic really starts to happen when you take those ideas into a recording studio, and with the right person by your side you can go out explore, add new colors, new ideas, and new perspectives in your music making the songs really jump out in a totally ethereal and unexplainable way, that’s probably my favorite part.
Tess Posner Answering: “I love trying to translate an idea into a story through music. I often start with a feeling or even a word, and I love the process of fleshing that out. It both requires a deep focus and effort, and a letting go into the pure experience of the music to work. It’s endlessly fun.”
Lil MC Answering: I definitely prefer the writing process to recording. I tend to be the opposite of a perfectionist when it comes to recording, so if I lay down a track and it isn’t absolutely flawless I’ll still keep it and send it out for mix and master because those small human errors are what makes music relatable. When it comes to writing I am very intentional about every single word used. As an MC I want to add as many layers to my lyrics as possible, filled with hidden meaning and symbols so that the listener feels inclined to listen over and over again to unravel more about the context of the song each time they listen.
With all of the different things you have going on, how do you stay balanced and how do you recharge? What are your favorite self care practices?

Meghan Pulles Answering: Such a good question! It’s so important for us as artists and creatives to take care of ourselves, I love meditating, and practicing gratitude everyday. I also do a physical workout 3-4 times a week and I find that really helps my head from going off the deep end. It’s also important to just be kind to others, but also be kind to ourselves. Don’t beat yourself up if you didn’t get a lot done some days, instead celebrate what you did do even if that means you just took a shower, and had some food. Celebrate the small things!

Tess Posner Answering: “Meditation to clear my mind, and hiking. Getting into nature is so rejuvenating.”
Lil MC Answering: I definitely tend to be the type of person who says yes to everything and then gets overwhelmed with over-commitment. I am also a single mom so spending time with my son is absolutely essential to my well-being so I have to be mindful to balance my life as an artist, my work in artist education, and being a mother. I definitely prioritize mental health, and have been an advocate for therapy and have been doing therapy consistently for 8 years. I recently became sober so that transition to a clean and sober lifestyle came with many obstacles to overcome and my therapist played a pivotal role in providing me with support and stability. Mindfulness, healthy eating, daily exercise, meditation, and open communication are daily practices that I have incorporated into my routine and without these practices it would be impossible to balance everything I have going on in my life.
Produced by a Girl Answering: Holistic Health. I’m a huge advocate for women taking care of their mental health in the music industry and am also a clinical Rapid Transformation Therapy Practitioner and run my own holistic health clinic in the evenings. It’s really important as creatives to pay as much attention to their wellbeing as they do their art. It’s symbiotic. If you take care of your health, mind, body, spirit etc. you will be a better performer, singer, songwriter, artist, producer, dj, creative etc.

Would you have any advice for would-be artists or songwriters wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Meghan Pulles Answering: Keep going because there is a place in this world for your art and music. Listen to as much music as possible, write in inspiration of it, go to concerts and shows, and soak up all of the inspiration that you can. Self-confidence doesn’t just happen, it’s a journey and don’t be hard on yourself if you’re having a hard time with it because we all had to go through the darkness to get to the light.
Tess Posner Answering: “Your voice matters. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, or tell you you can’t make art. It’s important to practice, learn, work hard, improve but having faith in yourself will keep you going in challenging moments. It’s worth it!”
Lil MC Answering: Be as authentic as possible. Discover who you are and tell your story, don’t try to emulate the music of artists that are already successful, find your own voice. Everyone has personal heros and influences but it’s important that you use that inspiration to find your own sound because that is what is going to make people fans of your music.
Produced by a Girl Answering: Be a leader. Find a space in the music industry to improve and add to that space aside from your artist career. The community you build, contributing and giving back to the music industry aside from your fanbase will leave you with a family in music that will lift you up and encourage you. It’s a win-win situation. Changing the industry one day at a time. You’ve got this. And if you need encouragement in the industry, stop by Produced by a Girl. We Gotchu Girl.
Please let everyone know where they can keep up with you and your new music!
