IN THE MIX WITH DJ divaDanielle

In the Mix with DJ divaDanielle:
We love your new fire music! How did you come up with the concept for the song?

I was doing a remix for the artist AirBall. So I wanted to make something that complimented the original and rounded out the release. So the fans had 2 fire songs! His was funkier so I wanted to bring a Tech House edge to my version of the remix. I am stoked with how the release turned out. You get an amazing track no matter what version.

What is your favorite part about  the song?

I love when it kicks back in after the second break down. I added these weird robotic laser sounds in. I think it’s just a lot of fun. You can sing along with the Styx sample and then just get crazy and weird when the beat kicks in.

What were you most meticulous about on your latest song?

I’m very meticulous about my mix. Really getting deep into my EQing and automations. I feel like a good mix is the key to any dance song. Understanding how it’s sounding in the studio vs how it will sound in the club. What do you need to do to get it to really bang on the dance floor? It takes a lot of mastery and I’m just feeling comfortable doing it now. I owe that to a lot of great teachers and other artists who have taught me stuff along the way.

Your latest collaboration, how did this come about?

I run a record label along with DJ Dan. AirBall had released on the label before. He reached out to me after hearing other tracks I’ve made. I was excited to work with someone new!

Who did what on the song?

I took his vocal sample and then re-wrote everything else. A new bass. New drums. New FX. New melodies. Made it something totally different so it had my divaDanielle stamp on it.

What was the writing process like?

It came really easy. I kinda heard the bass line in my head and played it out. I was sort of humming it to myself before I recorded anything in. From there, it was just about arranging and rises and builds to add excitement. It’s always nice when a track is easy. Sometimes you feel blocked and it takes a while to find the magic. But with this remix, I knew what I wanted and busted it out in like a week.

What kind of mood was set in order to create the magic?

I think I was already dancing around my living room to the original so I was feeling the bounce. Ha! I just listened a few times and then sang along to the vocals. Every track is different. I think because the vocal is recognizable, it already hooked me.

Is there a critique you’ve gotten on the single that you worked through and it’s made the overall work better?

It wasn’t a critique on this song but on some past songs, I noticed that they weren’t as loud once they were on a loud sound system. This goes back to the mix, I really dig deep into the kick and bass so I knew it would be dance floor ready.

What are you most excited about for fans to hear on your latest single?

It’s fun. It’s recognizable. I’m always excited to see everyone jump up and down after the breakdown. Then you know you have a winner! And it’s just nice to have fun with everyone. We spent so much time locked inside our houses, it feels great to be back out.

What has been the best feedback so far?

Another DJ I know in San Francisco sent me a video of her playing the track at one of her gigs. Seeing the joy on everyone’s faces in the video, it makes everything worth it. People dancing is the best feedback. That’s what you want a track to do. When you see it happening, it brings joy to my heart. I was once a baby raver. The person right in front of the DJ. So it makes me smile to see my music inspiring those baby club kids now!
