Fordo’s ‘2001’ Is a Pop Diary of Love, Lust, & Letting Go

Fordo’s debut album, 2001, takes listeners on a rollercoaster of emotions, from the thrill of romance to the ache that comes with heartbreak, all wrapped in sleek pop production with Y2K flair. Taking inspiration from his birth year, the musician’s 12-track offering dives deep into the 2000s pop era and explores toxic relationships, infatuation, and being head over heels for that special someone.

The first single, “Death of Me,” sets the tone with an upbeat pop tempo. In the song, he talks about a toxic love that he can’t escape. “You’re the death of me, but I can’t seem to let go,” he sings, wrestling with attachment and pain. It’s a strong, emotional start that leads into “24/7,” a high-energy guitar-led track about chasing someone who won’t match his energy. “I’m on you 24/7, but you’re not the one I’m chasing” captures the imbalance in their connection.

On “Undecided,” he explores having mixed feelings about a relationship. The lyrics “I can’t decide if I’m love or I’m losing” sum up the tension between walking away and holding on. “Obvious” follows and is led by a victorious horn loop and a question about getting out of the friend zone: “Didn’t I make it obvious?” Fordo expresses how he doesn’t want to be platonic and is tired of mixed signals and games.

Things heat up on “Kama Sutra,” a sensual, 2000s-inspired single with lyrics like “Let me kiss you head to toe… I’ll give you something new.” The mood lightens with “Nobody’s Watching,” a carefree EDM-pop track encouraging someone to get lost in the rhythm: “Dance with me like nobody’s watching.

“Proceed with Caution,” which potentially samples “23” by Mike Will-Made-It, Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J, blends hip-hop and pop, painting the picture of an irresistible but dangerous lover: Lyrics like “You’re the type of girl that shouldn’t come without a warning” bring the narrative home. “Jaded” dives deeper into the emotional burnout of giving more love than receiving it. He croons, “I’m jaded by the love I gave, but didn’t get back.”

With “Villain,” Fordo flips perspective, playing the role of the heartbreaker girls chase, singing “Nice guys doin’ you right, huh?“Mysterious” returns to desire and secrecy, while “Kiss Me Goodbye” blends rap and melody to blur the line between friendship and love.

“Another Life,” Fordo delivers his most vulnerable moment, mourning a breakup with the haunting thought: “Maybe in another life, you and I would never end.

From start to finish, 2001 is relatable to the core. It’s the perfect soundtrack for anyone who’s ever loved or lost.
