How are you using social media daily?

Instagram has been my go-to platform for social media, but I’m exploring TikTok now as well. I try to keep up posting at least a few times per week and share interview content, new music production, DJing, and personal life. I’ll respond to direct messages, have conversations with friends and fans, and keep up with other accounts. Often times social media becomes a source of comic relief for me during the day with all of the funny memes.

Is there a way you most like to interact with your fans on social media?

I’m a big proponent of direct messaging on social media. It’s the fastest and most comfortable way fans can reach out to me. There are a lot of people I’ve met on Instagram whether as listeners, other artists, and even long-time friends I hadn’t heard from in many years. Many of us have still been able to keep a line of communication open because of social media. I always try to follow people back and keep up with their posts too. As the fanbase grows, it becomes more difficult as an artist to keep up communications on the individual level; but we can use social media to tie all of our fans into one community and develop a sense of solidarity.

Who are you inspired by on social media?

I follow a lot of nature and travel accounts, other unique artists, and my long-time favorites for inspiration. It’s a relief to scroll past all the routine memes, news, and stumble across an otherworldly scene or distant landscape. It’s a chance to transport your mind elsewhere and a reminder of how big of a world we live in. I get a lot of creative inspiration in those brief moments. Also, there are producers and DJ’s I look up to and follow on Instagram, and when I see them posting not just the excitement of a music career, but also their family life, it inspires me to find balance in my own career and open up more to sharing my day to day life.

Do you look to social media when you’re looking for new material for music?

Sure! I always look out for new music to use in my DJ sets, remix, or collaborators I can see myself working with in the future. Social media for artists has become a place to create “micro-content” around our music, so there is even more material now around each song. In addition, I learn about new production methods or tools based on what ads show up in my feed, or what gear other artists are posting reviews about. Whether it’s musical or artistic elements, I find social media to be a key source of new material.

Who do you turn to when you have a few ideas for a new song?

I always send my demos to my production team first. I’ll usually draft up a basic melody and throw a drum pattern over it just to give them an idea. It’s always amazing working with other musicians and seasoned industry professionals, realizing the variety and depth of vision which can come out of just a basic idea. My team at Nimble Agency has been working with me for over 5 years and by now we can comprehensively mold ideas to fit the overall sound of DCPA.

Is it hard to change the tune of a song you feel really strongly about if there are conflicting views on how it should be done?

I grew up always playing “lead” instruments – piano, trumpet, and guitar. Because of this, I always played the melodic parts of music that people remember most, as well as the solo sections. With that background, I tend to focus on writing melodies and can get locked into my ideas. Sometimes they get too complicated or intricate, or there are too many lead melodies going on at once. I used to be more resistant to changing the tune of a song, but over time it has become easier to accept other viewpoints. My production mindset shifted heavily once I started DJing live on a weekly basis. If you spend all your time in the studio, you can lose sight of what really makes a track move the dance floor. I’ve found that the biggest crowd shakers are often-times the most simple productions, or focus heavily on just one main element in the song.

What song of yours is really close to your heart right now that fans should put on their playlist next?

“Iconic Love” is still making a great push with the fans, and after being able to DJ some of my closest friends’ wedding this past weekend, the song has gotten even closer to my heart!

Can you give us some insider info on what to look out for next with your music?

My next track is called “I Feel It Too”. It’s the culmination of a cosmic energy and represents a connection between two souls. The song has an energetic and emotional electro-pop sound to it, and features vocal samples from Jovani Occomy and Kate Wild on Splice. My favorite lyric from the track is “I know you were trying so hard, we’ve got to save the world.” Can’t wait to get this one out next month!
