What fire new music can you tell your new fans here about?
Welcome to DCPA! My latest track ‘Keep Your Eyes Closed’ has quickly become a favorite among existing listeners. I’m releasing a new music video to go with it on VEVO December 3rd so look for that on VEVO and YouTube. Thanks in advance for taking time to listen!
What is your favorite verse on it?
‘Keep Your Eyes Closed’ has a very simple lyric structure. It’s basically built around one verse/chorus.
“Keep your eyes closed, when it’s raining, hold your heart now, it’s gon’ be alright. No matter what they say to you, do to you, try to stay cool, Sun shining when the lights are dark so hold your heart, it’s alright”
My favorite line is “No matter what they say to you, do to you, try to stay cool”. This resonates with me because it’s how I’ve always tried to handle adversity. I believe our co-existence is highly dependent on our ability to block out irrelevance. We often can’t help but focus on and vocalize our negativity, which quickly becomes irrelevant in problem solving. Directing that bad energy at others just compounds the issue. Cooler heads prevail, as they say!
What were you most meticulous about on your latest song?
I spent the most amount of time developing a song structure that was intricate, but not confusing. There’s a lot of simultaneous emotions going on that must be resolved within the melody. Given the vocal structure, I felt it was important to channel these different energies through the instrumental. I get mentally attached when writing musical patterns, usually ending up with too much going on and then meticulously pick apart the unnecessary stuff along the way.
Any new collabs happening soon?
I’m working on several tracks for 2022 with my recent collaborators. Projects are in place with artists such as Filmatic, Marcia (MISHA) Sondeijker, Mike Cruz, and Pelican Dock!
Dream collab?
ATB has always been my favorite music producer. He’s transcendent in his approach to music, covering all my favorite genres. Something about his melodies and chord progressions is otherworldly which always stood out to me. I can really put my mind in another dimension listening to his music. I also really appreciate his energy during live performances and how he conducts himself online and in person.
Is there a critique you’ve gotten on your music that you worked through and it’s made the overall work better?
The best advice I ever get on a demo relates to controlling the energy level. It’s easy for someone like me who grew up focusing on treble instruments, melodic structure, solos, etc. to overlook structural and rhythmic elements that transfer energy to the listener.
You must have a catchy melody, but even more production energy comes from how you structure drums, bass, atmospheric elements, filtering, other FX. Being able to step back and critically review the overall song is key to capturing a commercial audience.
What are you most excited about for fans to hear on your latest single?
When you hear ‘Keep Your Eyes Closed’, listen for the subtle things happening in the background, and how the synthesizers respond to the vocal and other sounds. There’s a thunderstorm recording in the background which is a canvas for the track. The storm follows the song structure. If you listen closely, you will hear rain and wind during the calm sections/verses, while a lightning strike triggers the chorus sections. The synths used in the chorus are more electrified and distorted, whereas the verse synths are calming and contemplative in nature.
Give us anything else you want to know about what you’re up to?
I’ll be firing off a lot of great new electro house and progressive tracks in early 2022, DJ mixes, and some cover songs. Can’t wait to share what I’ve been working on this year with you all. I’ve learned video content is key in today’s music world, so you can expect to see much more of me on tape in 2022!
How do we continue to follow you?
