Dawn Laird‘s “Marla Hooch” is the second single from her forthcoming project, Doreen. On the song, Laird pays homage to Marla Hooch from the 1992 baseball flick, A League of Their Own. Aside from this, the Newcastle, Australia femcee embraces what society frowns upon. Though Laird is looked over because of assets, it only pushes her to go harder. She’s a woman with a purpose and refuses to let anything get in the way of that. She raps, “I’ve got bigger fish to fry, out here swimming with them sharks, dodging vultures in my sky.”
Likewise, the song goes to follow this saying, “love the skin you’re in.” Overall, forget about other’s opinions. If you work hard, it’s guaranteed to pay off in the long run.
Per Laird’s press release, “This song is about bypassing spaces where the measure of your worth is skin deep or conjuring courage from deep within your gut, walking straight into those spaces and shooting your shot anyway because you already know your worth.”
Throughout “Marla Hooch,” the rapstress showcases hard-hitting rhymes and a swift cadence in her no-nonsense twang. In like manner, “Marla Hooch” carries a booming baseline and is coupled with sporadic hi-hats, 808 slides, a dark bell recording, a dwindling sound, eerie synths, and piano riffs. The song, as a whole, has a spacey feel to it. This song was both produced and written by Dawn Laird.
