Corey Benji showcases a strong suit of gratitude in his latest single, “My Time.” Off the bat, he gives thanks to his day ones. He also expresses this same expression toward women who dubbed him in the past.
The instrumental takes on a galactic trap form. Corey Benji pairs this delivery with an energetic flow.
During the first verse, the rapper counts his blessings to see another day. Then, he unveils the key to living a happy lifestyle.
“I’m so cautious/Separate my enemies from my friends/Do my own shit yeah, I never really needed a trend/And i’mma be like this till the end,” he raps.
From there, Corey Benji lets it be known that it’s crunch time 24/7. There are no days off when it’s time to get to a bag. This same notion applies to his craft as well.
When life gets rough, the studio becomes his solace. The artist continues to express how thankful he is to have a knack for creating music.
“The kid so lyrical /God bless I’m spiritual/Work hard for a miracle/Bad vibes invisible,” he raps. He iterates that nothing is breaking his spirit.
“Can’t walk in my shoes (yeah)/Can’t fuck with the crew( yeah)/Can’t fuck wit the team (yeah)/The money I need (yeah)/Just double the breesh (yeah),” he spits.
Natalee Gilbert from New Fire Music got the opportunity to speak with Corey Benji and she asked the following questions:
1. What’s your stage name?
My stage name is Corey Benji
2. How did you start making music?
I started writing rhymes at age 10 but started taking it seriously at 18 years old. One of my close friends and I started together.
3. Did you find some trouble creating this album? If so, what was it?
The only trouble I’ve gone through with making this tape was trying to set up studio sessions at certain times because other artists had booked the session for those times before I even get the chance to get to it.
4. Can you recall the day you first started your project “City Full Of Hate”?
Yes. I remember the first song I recorded for the project was “City Full Of Hate” (Outro). When I began writing and practicing the song, I knew it was going to be something special. I really expressed my pain on that one by speaking to my friends that had passed away from young. I had recorded the song in January of 2021.
5. What steps did you take to create your new album?
The steps that I took to create this album were simply mixing old written songs with a couple of new songs I had made at the time of this tape. I would book a 2 hours session to work on 2 songs each session. I also would come back to get some of the songs mixed and mastered as well. I also made sure I had the right features on this tape with my friends who are artists as well and go by the names of E Bands, Sonny Glisten, Toni Bee, and RealRiich Baby.
6. Favorite song on the album?
“Win”
7. Influences (can be music or generally):
My musical influences are artists such as Michael Jackson, Aaliyah, Alicia Keys, Nas, Jay Z, Biggie, J Cole, Joey Badass, G Herbo, Soulja Boy, JayDaYoungan, Baby Smoove, Polo G, Lil Tecca, Kodak Black, and all my friends who make music. My daily influences are family, close friends and other musicians I get to meet.
8. How would you describe the message behind this album?
The message behind this album is simply manifesting my future of having a successful music career one day and also past experiences. Experiences such as losing childhood friends, grinding in the studio and I had one song on the tape called “Heartbreak” about some girl that had my mental health messed up for a little period of time. The main message for this tape is a manifestation of making it big with my music.
9. What things do you need to have before creating in the studio?
I need to have good chemistry with any engineer I work with or it’s not gonna work and sometimes I just need my weed.
10. What do you aim for in your overall sound? What is your message?
I aim to be real and authentic with anything I put out. I want the audience to relate and feel the pain in every bar I spit. Not doing it for the fame. I’m doing it to express the pain and manifest my future with this music no exaggeration. My message for anyone who listens to my music is to simply keep grinding no matter what anyone tells you or whatever living condition you’re in because anything is possible and you can make it out of your situation if you work hard on achieving your goals. You only got one life to live so it’s only right to work hard and chase the life that you really want for yourself instead of doing something or working somewhere you not happy.
