Chris Marcel‘s Maybe in a Different Lifetime brings out the emotions most individuals feel after a big breakup. Mirroring the wave of emotions through serene alternative pop, R&B, lofi, rock, and jazzy beats, Marcel enlists several artists to bring these introspective lyrics to life. The tracks strike loving memories in the core. Moreso, the musicians recall bittersweet moments and dawn on the “what if’s” in their relationships. Even though their partners seemingly throw in the towel, the four tracks show they are fighting for who they love. Although they try moving on, this person seems to hold them back from doing so.
The first track, “Until The End of Time,” highlights a situationship that ended before its well, time. The acoustic-guitar loop allows E-Zilla, Shmoneyyy, Jetskiiimani, and Dolce Delux to speak on how they’ve been dealing with this sudden split.
E-Zilla said it best when he sings, “I do whatever, to stop all the bleeding that makes our world so red.”
Jetskiiimani also depicts the feeling of losing someone you haven’t really gotten a chance to build with.
Addressing her wishy-washy ways, he croons, “I’m trying to be the one you put the trust in/But what is good is the truth if you say that I’m buffing?/Oh, Beautiful youth, where are we going/I wonder/Let’s keep it a buck we’re not getting younger/Don’t know a soul who can understand what I’m under.”
“Durango” is an ambient lofi meets rock offering that finds J4NAS, Elijah Dai, Beau Blanco, Erniie, Fonto, and Lovegood detailing the pain they’ve endured since going their separate ways with a lover. The memories seem to make them yearn for reconciliation.
“Who in the hell am I going to blame for this? You came around and changing shit/You know that you were my favorite,” Elijah Dai raps.

Another notable line comes from Fronto, who says,
“Last time I saw you/I was looking at the photo from the day we meet/Oh I bet life hasn’t felt the same, west side love/I miss that look on your face, and now I can’t see it no more.“
The last track, “Tranquility,” serves as an empowering “aha” toward an ex they thought they’d never move on from. Choosing to put themselves first, Jai Emm, TRIBEWILD, and Nina Woods close the chapter of their previous love stories. Regardless of many sleepless, lonely nights, they’ve managed to keep sane and fall in love with the best versions of themselves.
The warm jazzy/R&B beat sees singers Jai Emm and Nina Woods thanking their exes but vowing to move on to the next.
Jai Emm sings a powerful line that propels the song’s theme, “Never really thought I could live life without you, but now that I’m through/I’m forever putting myself first, and I’m glad I found you.”
Overall, Chris Marcel’s production is the weight that holds all these vulnerable messages together. His ability to blend ethereal arrangements and different genres proves that he can create any sonic aura. The producer and artists have composed a project that newly single people can lean on during those hard times.
