Welcome to the Blog! My name is Vivek Thomas, a new writer for New Fire Music. My goal for this channel is to take you into the world of live music, exploring what different artists offer the attendees who make the effort to see them perform – both intentionally and unintentionally.
Much of today’s music scene is filled with streaming goals, SoundCloud come ups, and TikTok one hit wonders. While there’s nothing wrong with that, the vision of this blog is to revive the passion for music our grandparents and ancestors had while getting you hype for who’s out there on tour right now!
Now let me be clear, I am doing my best to make this content as unbiased as possible. I want to give y’all the raw experience of a newcomer to the scene. My background context on the artist may include 1-2 weeks of listening to the artist’s music (including any new albums), doing some quick google searches to see what articles have been recently published, and finally catching up on the Spotify Artist Spotlight to familiarize myself.
This week I had the pleasure of attending G-Flip’s (pn’s: they/them) show at Washington DC’s newest and hottest venue – The Atlantis.

G Flip’s sound is as unique as it gets. They have played the drums for as long as they can remember, and have found equal talent as a percussionist, guitarist, and vocalist. They find drumming inspiration from Travis Barker, composing comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, a voice like Avril Lavigne, and an attitude like Kurt Cobain. They have wrapped up all of these traits into the present that is their newest album “DRUMMER”.
G Flip brings a sonic blend of Indy Punk mixed with Garage Rock that gets you moving. Pairing these sounds with electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards and obviously… drums, they succeed at telling stories of heartbreak, relationships, and acceptance in ways that have rarely been done before.
The performance of their song “Rough” included a floor tom drum line that rumbled the stage and gave insight into the earth shaking question of “how the hell did we get so rough in our love?” Source: _vivekthomas
To accompany the unique music was an even more unique following that was in attendance.
Upon arrival, I was quickly interested in the size and type of crowd waiting in line outside The Atlantis. As a non-binary member of the LGBTQIA+ community, G Flip has made sure to identify with all things PRIDE at all times, and their fans can’t get enough of it.
One attendee told me that “as a queer individual, they were so happy to finally find a non-binary babe who brings out the raw emotions in everyone.”
As one of maybe 10 straight people in the crowd, I can tell you that no matter your sexual preferences or political stance, this non-binary babe is a ROCK STAR, and The Atlantis was a perfect place for their first headlining show in DC.
G Flip’s music promotes, dare I say, embodies emotion and creates a space for you to feel everything from an ear-to-ear smile to a river of tears flowing from your eyeballs. And if you felt even slightly uncomfortable with the emotions you were experiencing, G Flip started off the show with rules on behavior and affection expected during their set, setting the tone for what the night would be like.
Rule #1 being my favorite – Don’t be a dickhead.
From getting tattoos during their performances, to breaking their hand and playing a show one-handed the same week, this writer confirms that G Flip is a non-binary badass who isn’t scared of anything. I’m not sure if their fearless attitude is hereditary or just a byproduct of being an Aussie, but it’s contagious and leaves their fans wanting to run through a brick wall to kiss their partners.
As I mentioned, one of their most recent proofs of their badassery was breaking their hand and proceeding to play a show – including the drums… later that week. Breaking your hand in a lame way is one thing, but smashing it while outscoring your entire band in the Jakar Arcade Boxing Game is a story in itself. All of the fans I had the chance to speak with, men included, were unsure if they could outscore G Flip in this game, and honestly, I think they would give me a run for my money… I mean they broke their hand in the process.
Not only did this experience provide great music, it also opened up the world of the LGBTQIA+ community beyond the rallies and headlines. It simply allowed fans to look up to a rock and roll idol who finally represented them.
I would definitely recommend you give G Flip’s new album DRUMMER a few listens during your next car ride or workout, or maybe even to help you through a recent break up or hard time. Their music is able to speak to a lot of different things we as people go through, and their passion is channeled to help the listener in a constructive way.
