Paola la Uníca Finds Strength in Solitude on “sola”

Paola la Uníca

Paola la Uníca gives listeners a shoulder to lean on with her song “sola.”

Over a melancholic reggaeton beat, she signals the absence of support through a disconnected phone line, emphasizing how isolated she feels from the world around her. Through a passionate vocal range, she sings about fighting silent battles and having no tears left to cry. Her vulnerability takes the lead in lyrics like, “Yo estaba sola en la oscuridad / Nadie podía ni me quería salvar / No queda más / No tengo más lágrimas.”

In the chorus, Paola la Uníca reflects on how, through it all, she ultimately finds herself alone before diving deeper into what it’s like to feel hopeless that things will get better. The lines “¿Dónde se fue mi mente? / Desvelada / amor es bonito ¿Pero qué vale si no puedo sentirlo?” show how she’s mastering the art of being alone, not just physically, but mentally. At the same time, she acknowledges how her mental state has reshaped her view on life.

At the end of “sola,” she circles back to the theme of depression, echoing the pain of feeling disconnected from everyone around her. At its core, “sola” is a raw reflection on mental health: a reminder that sometimes the hardest battles are the ones fought in silence, and that feeling alone doesn’t always mean you’re truly alone.

The song’s message is further amplified in the music video, where three individuals slowly lose their color and fade into black-and-white. Paola, also stripped of color, ultimately regains hers after going to church and saying a prayer. The visual serves as a subtle reminder that faith can provide strength during life’s darkest moments.

“sola” is Paola la Uníca’s first song that’s entirely in Spanish, and she holds it close to her heart. It’s about her journey with mental health. In 2023, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2023 and was hospitalized twice since that year.

“It was one of the hardest times of my life, but it brought me closer to God,” Paola la Uníca said. “I can now say that I am not suffering from bipolar disorder, but am living with it. This is for the people who feel like they have no one. I see you, and you are not alone, even though it feels that way sometimes. God is with you, and you are so loved in the world.”
