There’s an incredible influx of rising artistry in the Alternative R&B community and we’re here for it. This past weekend, we stumbled on Caroline Joy and Pakk Wong. The Indonesian Alt duo we didn’t know we needed and we’ve been obsessed with their latest single “Liberty.”
Joy’s vocals are the centerpiece of the song, delivering a powerful and emotive performance. Her voice is both soulful and delicate, conveying a sense of vulnerability and raw emotion. The vocal delivery is complemented by harmonies and backing vocals that enhance the song’s airy quality, which immediately coerces memorization of the catchy chorus.
“Take me to your truth and set me free, release my mind and give me Liberty”
“Liberty” explores themes of new love and openness. Joy sings of despair and emptiness before finding a new love interest who steers her back to some form of color and light in her life. The feeling of it all is exhilarating and euphoric, which fairly sets the mood of the song.
With keen production lead by Pakk Wong, the young producer uses layers of synths creating a dreamy backdrop, while subtle electronic beats and electric guitar strings add a contemporary edge to the record. Wong also incorporates elements of Neo-Soul, giving it a rich, textured sound. As the track progresses, a breakbeat drum pattern kicks in showcasing the complex Drum and Bass “DNB” masterpiece.
The breakbeat and bassline fade out, leaving behind the ambient sounds introduced at the beginning of the song creating a full circle experience for the listener. As the melody and echoes dim, the sense of completion sets in inviting you to reflect and repeat the track. Quality, composition, memorability, and structure. We’d give this song a 10/10 and a definite add to our next NFM playlist.
