Country/Americana songwriter Drew Haley is fueled by deep love: love for the art of storytelling, love for the classic rock and blues music she grew up on, and love for her husband and three children. Her voice exudes a subtle yet soulful power, inspired by the tight country harmonies of the Judds and the Dixie Chicks as well as the effortless cool of alt-rockers Jewel and Sheryl Crow. An agile, candid songwriter, Haley has developed a country-leaning, narrative style rooted in real experience, with hope and healing at the emotional core of each song. As an artist, she finds strength in both spirituality and self-reflection, and she views songwriting as a vital therapeutic outlet: “I always have a melody floating around in my head, and I have to get it out. My goal is to make music that uplifts others—especially young girls, moms, and anyone who is struggling.”
We love your new fire music! How did you come up with the concept for the song?
I wrote Hallway after going through a painful divorce years ago. It was a dark time in my life where I was doing alot of soul searching, praying and really being introspective. I’m a very visual person so I could see that my heart was like a house and after so much hurt and heartbreak over the years, it just started to shut down. The rooms were dark, the doors were closed and the only area of my heart that I could allow this person in was the hallway, near the door.
What is your favorite part about the song?
I really love the piano in the intro and throughout the song. My producer David Spencer came up with that and it’s so cool and fun to play.
What were you most meticulous about on your latest song?
I definitely wanted it to have a haunting, sad vibe because it’s important that the production matched the lyrics and overall feel of the song.
Your latest collaboration, how did this come about?
I work with David Spencer (my producer) on all of my songs. He’s one of the only people I trust to really understand my sound and he creates these complimentary hooks on either guitar or piano that always bring my songs to that next level. He’s incredible to work with
Who did what on the song?
David Spencer on keys, Scotty Murray on guitar and myself on vocals
What was the writing process like?
This song was very conscious and kinda fell onto the paper. I feel like that happens the most when I write a really heartfelt sad song.
What kind of mood was set in order to create the magic?
In the studio I feel really comfortable working with my producer and team. It’s nice that I can really take my time with the vocals and entire process to make sure we really get it right. It’s important to feel relaxed so that I can focus completely.
Is there a critique you’ve gotten on the single that you worked through and it’s made the overall work better?
I’m very open to and trust my “ears”, I like to call them. My mom, my husband and my producer always give me their input on my songs and I really value it. It’s important to have people like that in your life I think.. I wouldn’t take just everybody’s opinion into account but I trust theirs.
What are you most excited about for fans to hear on your latest single?
I’m super excited for them to see the music video. I think it came out really good and it was a blast shooting it with Ives Salbert with Elevator Visuals.
What has been the best feedback so far?
That it gets stuck in your head.. that’s a good sign.
Leave us with your favorite fire lyrics of the song?
“the house we built on sinking sand, we slowly watched it slip through our hands”.
