Keen@n Releases Chill Trap Song “Kickback”

Burke, Virginia artist Keen@n released his second single of 2022 titled Kickback. Kickback is about as laid-back as the DMV-born artist himself. His monotone, yet distinct vocals will keep you entranced throughout the entire track. The euphonious beat, also produced by Keen@n, complemented his sound perfectly. Kickback is a feel-good track that anyone can catch a vibe to. Play this when you’re riding down the highway, spending the day outside on the beach, or vibing at the kickback.

 

 

The one thing that makes this track stand out the most is the setting that it mentally puts you in immediately. Keen@n nonchalantly portrays the scene early in the track with lyrics like “I might roll a jay, I might watch some Netflix.”  While that might not seem like much, his low pitch, casual delivery over the mid tempo instrumental really brings you in to his world. Starting off the song this way makes it clear what type of euphoric experience the listener is in for. Keen@n’s music is reminiscent of artists like Ugly God, Wintertime, early Lil Yachty,  and others who are apart of the chill rap movement. 

Keen@n managed to sneak in some self expression in his lyrics, giving us some insight on who he really is personality-wise. “Keep it lowkey, I don’t chase no clout” is his code. His introverted nature is both relatable and humble. As long as his fans are having a good time listening to his music at the kickback, Keen@n is satisfied. The only criticism that I have with this track is that some of the lyrics are hard to understand. Personally, I understand what Keen@n is trying to do with the vocals. The slurred, meshed vocals is something you see a lot in the Pluggnb rap scene with artists like Yeat, Autumn!, Summrs ,Soja Brat and others. Using this style is on trend with what’s popping in the underground scene and is something he should keep doing. Just make sure you listen to the track in all settings (headphones, car, stereo system, etc.) so you’re certain that everything can be understood.
