In a New ‘Dimension’ with Cate Hamilton

Hello Cate! Great to speak with you!

You just released a new song! Will you tell us about it?

“Dimension” is about that feeling you get when you meet a stranger, but it feels so familiar like you’ve definitely met them before. My hot take is that that feeling of familiarity is some kind of soulmate reunion from past lives or different dimensions and this song explores that concept. I love trying to wrap my head around this phenomenon! For example, how do I explain when I meet someone and we click immediately in a way that feels almost like deja vu? It’s a spiritual experience to feel deeply connected to someone you barely know.

What was the creative process for it?

Once I went to add vocals to this song, I was so surprised that the melody for this came easily because it usually takes me a while to feel satisfied with what I come up with, but this one felt like it just flew out of me. This was interesting to experience because it felt like it mirrored the concept of the song too which is just that sometimes it’s eery when things feel so natural without taking a ton of effort. It makes you wonder why everything doesn’t feel that way. I definitely can’t say this is the case for 99% of the music I make. Also, I really enjoyed trying to embody, vocally and lyrically, that powerful feeling of euphoria when you really vibe with someone new while creating this song.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

Snoh Aalegra, Magdalena Bay, Tame Impala, Pond, Khruangbin

Who would be a dream collaboration for you?

Definitely Tame Impala. If I could have Kevin produce a track for me, I would probably die from excitement. His genre of Psychedelic Rock has molded the way that I want to make music. Heavy reverb and synth sounds are two things I find myself much more inspired to use. If only I could get my beats to sound like his !!!

Do you have a piece of advice you carry with you that you like to pass on to other musicians?

My advice is to not get so caught up in social media numbers. I’m constantly reminding myself that while keeping up some kind of online presence is important for getting your music out there, it’s not the only measure of success. Sometimes it seems like if I’m not growing on Instagram or going viral on Tik Tok, that I have failed in some way when the reality is: I’m just trying to make music. That’s the thing I really enjoy. If I can do that well, the rest will follow.

Any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?

The music video for “Dimension” is coming out next Friday, April 15th! I’m also working on a really fun project that should get rolling in the next coming weeks, but basically, I’m going to be selling custom recorded vinyl records. Each record I sell will be completely one of a kind because I will record each vinyl individually. There will be no copied or repeated takes, only a one-take recording made specifically for the person who has purchased it which I think is so cute.

Please let everyone know where they can keep up with you and your music!
