‘Free Urself’ Out Now!
After we heard the newly released single titled ‘Free Urself’, we were very impressed with Royal Marquís to say the least. With a very strong debut single, we had to get to know a bit more about the North Carolina-based artist, model and curator. His blend of soul and alternative R&B immediately put him in the conversation with artists like Q, Leven Kali, Cleo Sol, and Tom Misch, just to name a few. We asked Royal Marquís about his energy going in to 2021, what versatility in music means to him, dream collaborations, and more. The multi-faceted artist had a lot to say! Stream Free Urself on all platforms now and enjoy the interview.
How are you doing two months in to 2021?
Royal Marquís starts the conversation letting us know that everything is starting to align and he’s feeling really grateful. He’s getting signs from the universe that he’s exactly where he’s supposed to be, doing exactly what he’s supposed to be doing.
We were introduced to you on ‘WEAK’ feat. BellaTheReaper. How does this song compare?
We kind of knew the answer to this question before we asked, but we wanted to hear Royal Marquís speak to the difference between a trap song and the more soulful single he just released, while having an appreciation for both!
How would you describe yourself as an artist?
Who are some of your favorite artists/influences?
All of these artists are great writers, very expressive, and hard to put in a box! Makes sense.
What does versatility in music mean to you?
This is a question we love to ask new artists. Marquís says versatility means ‘being okay with being a chameleon’; being comfortable taking a chance and being outside of your comfort zone. As genres start to blend more everyday, artists with one sound may not last long. We are happy the North Carolina musician has his head in the right place.
Since you are a fairly new artist, what do you want potential fans to know about you?
Royal Marquís is genuinely creating music to make beautiful pieces of art that live on forever. He is dedicated to putting in the time it takes to create long lasting music.
Describe your recording process?
We learn that ‘Free Urself’ was recorded in a bedroom on iPhone headphones (wow!). The artist also speaks to the importance of his mental space when going in to a place of creation.
What are some of your other interests outside of music?
Royal Marquís is interested in modeling, curating, photography, and animals. Dope!
Who would be a dream collaboration for you?
Marquís throws a shoutout to British music collective SAULT, made up of Cleo Sol and Inflo.
Where can people follow you and stream your music?
